Werkstattgespräch: Ukrainian National Communism in Subcarpathian Rus

Anastasiia Luzhanytsia: "Ukrainian National Communism in Subcarpathian Rus in the 1920s"

21 May 2025, 14.15 h

Seminarraum Collegium Carolinum (Hochstraße 8, 81669 München, second floor) and via Zoom

The presentation will introduce the dissertation project examining the development of Ukrainian national communism in Subcarpathia in the 1920s. Originally, Subcarpathian communists leaned towards a great Russian national ideology. However, they did not develop a distinct national strategy, prioritizing social demands over national concerns. The national question gained prominence in the mid-1920s, particularly after the 5th congress of the Comintern, which influenced the Subcarpathian communists to intensify their nationalist statements. After a few years, the Subcarpathian communists officially shifted to Ukrainian nationalism in 1926. The establishment of political connections with Ukrainian national communist groups contributed to their advocacy for unification with Soviet Ukraine. The presentation will also outline the research approach to analyze the Subcarpathian communists’ perception of Ukrainian nationalism within the broader contexts of the Comintern, the Soviet Union, and Czechoslovakia.
