Final program to follow.

On Friday, 4 December 2026, the Prague Branch of Collegium Carolinum will host the workshop “Post-Imperial Economy: Interwar Czechoslovakia and Its Central European Entanglements: Economic Fragmentation, State-Building and Transnational Cooperation, 1918–1938”, organized in cooperation with the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The workshop examines the economic consequences of the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the reorganization of economic relations in Central Europe after 1918. The collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy fragmented a previously integrated economic space and confronted companies, banks, business associations and economic experts with new borders, currencies, customs regimes and increasingly protectionist economic policies. At the same time, older economic ties did not simply disappear: actors sought to maintain, reconstruct or replace them through new forms of transnational cooperation.

Focusing particularly on Czechoslovakia and its Central European entanglements, the workshop asks how economic actors adapted to the post-imperial order and through which organizations, institutions and informal networks they attempted to rebuild cross-border economic relations.

The one-day workshop will bring together Czech and international scholars working on the economic history of interwar Central Europe. The final program will be published shortly.

Date: Friday, 4 December 2026, approx. 10:00–18:00
Venue: Prague Branch Office of Collegium Carolinum, Valentinská 91/1, 110 00 Prague 1, 3rd floor.
