Werkstattgespräch: Biodiversity protection in the forest ecosystems in the Ukrainian Carpathians: legal and institutional landscape

24. April 2024, 14.15 Uhr

Seminarraum des Collegium Carolinum (Hochstraße 8, 81669 München, 2. Stock) und über Zoom

Natalia Subbotina (Freie Ukrainische Universität München) stellt ihre Forschungen zum Thema "Biodiversity protection in the forest ecosystems in the Ukrainian Carpathians: legal and institutional landscape" vor.

The Ukrainian Carpathians account for only about 10% of the total area of the wider Carpathian ecoregion. Despite this relatively small numerical proportion, they are among the biodiversity hotspots of international importance, hosting, for example, the primeval beech forests listed as a UNESCO natural heritage site and providing habitat for large carnivores such as bear or lynx. Ukraine is a party to several global and regional biodiversity treaties. However, their implementation remains a challenge and national legislation in this area is highly fragmented, not to mention the practices of non-compliance and circumvention. This presentation aims to zoom in on the status quo of the legal and institutional landscape of biodiversity protection in the forest ecosystems of the Ukrainian Carpathians, highlighting both threats and positive developments in recent years.
