Werkstattgespräch: Eugenics in the Late Habsburg Empire: Networks, Discourses, Legacies

30. April 2024, 13 Uhr

Seminarraum des Collegium Carolinum (Hochstraße 8, 81669 München, 2. Stock) und über Zoom

CC-Nachwuchsstipendiat Vojtěch Pojar (CEU Budapest) stellt seine Forschungen zum Thema: "Eugenics in the Late Habsburg Empire: Networks, Discourses, Legacies" vor.

The talk examines how eugenic knowledge spread in the late Habsburg Empire. To this end, it analyzes four key networks in which eugenic ideas circulated at the time: those of early sociologists and their natural scientific allies, special educators, nationalist activists, and the temperance movement, respectively. The talk makes the case that these initial networks of eugenics proponents, and the circulation of knowledge they facilitated, had an imperial rather than national scope. Equally importantly, the members of these networks often used eugenics as a tool for cognitively managing the empire’s diverse population. They produced conflicting biopolitical blueprints based on race and biology, ranging from attempts to promote cooperation within the empire to dark visions of ethnic cleansing. The talk concludes by underscoring the striking longevity of these supra-national networks, discourses, and increasingly, practices, even after the dissolution of the empire.
