Martin Schulze Wessel is a Professor of East European History at the University of Munich. In his recent book, "The Curse of Empire: Ukraine, Poland, and the Errant Path in Russian History" (C.H.Beck, 2023), he tells the story of Russia, Ukraine, and Poland from a specific perspective. Schulze Wessel highlights the historical and cultural roots of Russia's war against Ukraine in Russian history. The main thesis is: Russia has an unresolved identity problem that is derived from its imperial past. By partitioning Poland and annexing Ukraine, Russian policy created a situation in which its national and imperial identities could no longer be separated. National and imperial identities merged. In the confrontation with the Polish and later the Ukrainian national movement, long-lasting cultural patterns emerged in Russia.
