Prof. Benno Gammerl (Florence):

Feeling Differently. The Emotional Lives of Same-Sex Loving Men
and Women in Postwar Germany

From cautious encounters to colorful pride parades, from police persecution to same-sex marriage – gay and lesbian trajectories have been challenging. And to this day they are less clearly geared towards success than the notion of liberalization suggests. Benno Gammerl’s recently published monograph offers the first comprehensive account of the history of homosexualities in the Federal Republic. The book vividly describes the everyday experiences and the emotional lives of same-sex loving people since the 1950s. The oral history interviews Gammerl conducted with women and men of different generations allow the book to present a rich and exciting narrative that highlights a part of history that has for too long received hardly any attention.
