- Doctorate at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (1998); dissertation on "Die Sudetendeutschen im NS-Staat" (The Sudeten Germans in the National Socialist State)
- "Drupa prize" for the best dissertation in the humanities at the Heinrich Heine University, awarded annually by the Messe Düsseldorf on the recommendation of the University's Faculty of Philosophy (1999)
- Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize for outstanding scientific achievements, awarded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Science and the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) (2002)
