  • Studied modern history, Eastern European history, and political science at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (1988-1994)
  • Doctorate at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (1998); dissertation on "Die Sudetendeutschen im NS-Staat" (The Sudeten Germans in the National Socialist State)
  • Post-doctoral thesis on the relations between the Soviet occupation zone/GDR and Czechoslovakia (1945-1969) (Düsseldorf 2005)
  • Assistant Professor (Privatdozent) for modern and contemporary history as well as Eastern European history of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (2007-2014)
  • Several years as a freelance journalist
  • 1998-2000: research project at the Mahn- und Gedenkstätte der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf (Memorial to the victims of the National Socialism in Düsseldorf) (since 2002)
  • 2000-2006: research assistant at the Institute for the Culture and History of the Germans in Eastern Europe (Institut für Kultur und Geschichte der Deutschen im östlichen Europa) at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf

  • 1995-1997 Doctoral fellowship at the Gerda Henkel Foundation
  • 1997 Fellowship at the Institute of European History, Mainz
  • "drupa prize" for the best dissertation in the humanities at the Heinrich Heine University, awarded annually on the recommendation of the University's Faculty of Philosophy (1999)
  • Heinz Maier-Leibnitz price for outstanding scientific achievements, awarded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Science and the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) (2002)
  • Since 2015: (official) guest professor at Charles University Prague
